The Friday Deploy Is Now a Podcast

· John Nunemaker · 2 min read

Garrett and I started a podcast. It's called The Friday Deploy, and the tagline is the whole point: ship on Friday, sleep through the night.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, the name might sound familiar. We've used it here because we think you should be able to deploy whenever you're ready, not just when somebody can spend the weekend watching for errors. The podcast is another place to talk about how we actually do that.

We work on Flipper Cloud and Fireside, so there's plenty to pull from. Feature flags, infrastructure, migrations, AI-assisted development, and deciding whether a change is worth the complexity. Sometimes the interesting part is how we shipped something. Sometimes it's what we threw away.

The first two episodes are a good place to start.

Episode 1: Changing the Wheels While the Car Is Moving

We look back at rebuilding Fireside while people kept using it. That included replacing old servers, upgrading Ruby and Rails, and moving from Postgres 9.5 to 18. We talk about how Flipper helped control the cutover, what it takes to verify a scary change, and why knowing what to say no to still matters when AI can write the code.

Listen to episode 1.

Episode 2: Your PR Shouldn't Make Your Stomach Hurt

AI can review your code forever. We compare the workflows that help us stop: small changes, bounded review loops, and pull requests with proof. Then we get into moving Fireside's file storage to Cloudflare R2 behind separate read and write flags, monitoring successful uploads as well as errors, and knowing when to scrap a big implementation for a simpler one.

Listen to episode 2.

If you use Flipper to make releases less stressful, you'll probably recognize a lot of what we talk about. It's the same idea, with more stories about the things we've broken and figured out along the way.
